ABOUT "CHEREMOSH"
Folk song and dance company "Cheremosh"

The history of "Cheremosh" Folk Song and Dance Ensemble at Ivan Franko National University of Lviv dates back to 1963. Talented artists of the time, Volodymyr Panasyuk (conductor), Taras Remeshylo (orchestra leader), and Pylyp Sekh (choreographer) took charge of "Cheremosh" at its origins.

The ensemble achieved its first big success in 1967 when it won the Regional competition of amateur art. In 1972 "Cheremosh" received a golden medal at the All-Soviet-Union competition of amateur art. During its early years the ensemble had performed in Kyiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Kharkiv, Donetsk, and other  cities of Ukraine, as well as visited Leningrad (currently St. Petersburg) with a concert and took part in the 25th anniversary celebration of Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin. In 1977 "Cheremosh" received the Diploma of 1st degree at the All-Soviet-Union competition Festival of amateur art. In 1978 "Cheremosh" was awarded the honorable title of "National ensemble".

During the almost 50-year history of "Cheremosh" a number of prominent Ukrainian artists had contributed to the ensemble's development, most notably Volodymyr Panasyuk, Bohdan Antkiv, Maria Melnyk, Orest Shcherbatyy, Roman Mazepa, Tetyana Kohut, Pylyp Sekh, Oleh Holdrych, Zinoviy Bulyk, Volodymyr Lyorchak, Bohdan Dvornyk and others. Over the years, hundreds of talented young students had devoted their lives to Ukrainian folk song, dance, and music in "Cheremosh".

Presently the ensemble is directed by Vasyl Pipash (artistic director and chief choreographer), Olena Volchek (choir conductor) and Roman Dolny (orchestra leader). The repertoire includes folk dances from different ethnic groups in Ukrainian Carpathians, folk songs and music arranged by famous Ukrainian composers, as well as special programmes dedicated to Christmas and Easter period and to Taras Shevchenko commemoration days.
